When working from home, procrastination is a curse that affects even the most seasoned online workers. No matter how much that email needs writing, there’s always something else that needs doing first, like cleaning your entire house from top to bottom or going for a drive around the block. With these five scientifically proven methods, you can take back the reigns of your life and start making money!

The 15-minute rule involves convincing yourself that after 15 minutes of doing the work you’ve been dreading, you can stop. However, most of the time, even once the 15 minutes are up, you keep pushing through. We mostly procrastinate doing tasks because when we think about them, we make them out to be much worse than they are. Once we’ve started them and realized they’re not as bad as they first appeared, continuing and finishing doesn’t seem as hard.

On the surface, some tasks can be daunting. It seems like there is so much to do, and with no plan or idea, how will you start? The simple answer is that you won’t. To stop procrastinating, try breaking your work up into smaller, more manageable chunks, and have a detailed plan of what you’re going to get done. If you’re trying to figure out what needs doing halfway through doing it, you’re using your time ineffectively. When there is less work, it’s easier to start. If you know exactly what you’re doing, you should be able to complete it without a hitch.

Your work environment can be a surprising underlying cause of the issue. Often, noisy pets or children demanding your attention can mean many people have no place other than their bedroom to work. This is a vital mistake. It’s likely that your bedroom has been decorated to be cosy and relaxing to help you sleep and lounge in. As a result, when you go into the room, your brain thinks it’s time for a nap and is shocked when you need to work! Consider allocating a specific room to be your study area, or if that isn’t possible, perhaps corner off a section of another room to function as one. It will pay for itself in the long run.

If you tell other people about your goals, whether it be a partner, sibling or your entire social media following, having others know what you hope to achieve can push you to complete it. In a sense, it’s putting pressure on yourself into doing it, out of fear of public shame or disappointment. Who says peer pressure has to be a bad thing?

Being a perfectionist is one of the most common reasons you just aren’t getting your work done. The unfortunate people who fall into this category will tell you that they’re consistently polishing what they’ve already done, even when it’s already perfect! If this is you, realize that not everything you do has to be outstanding and without a flaw. We’re all human, we all make mistakes. Stop looking for something wrong in your already wonderful piece of work. You’re only wasting your time, and in turn, losing potential profits.

Procrastination is obviously a prevalent issue that everyone faces. It doesn’t have to be. If you implement some of the techniques mentioned, you could be on your way to leading a successful, productive and fulfilling life.
